It's the rule
in the wilderness
to let deadwood
lie,
and it's enchanting
when it merges
with the soil
and the rocks
and yet retains its
distinct identity.
Who can know
what entwines the roots
of this massive tree
underground
that teems with
insects surviving 
on air and water and earth
but need no light.
And it is the same 
inside me.
